First meeting of the “Metabolomic Circle”
November 5, 2014

The innovative first meeting of the “Metabolomic Circle” took place on 17th October 2014 and was organized by the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences and Postgraduate Training of the Medical University of Lodz, Seventh Framework Programme REGPOT, Healthy Ageing Research Centre (HARC) and the ABSciex and Leco companies.

The conference under the patronage of the Dean of the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences and Postgraduate Training, i.e. Prof. Andrzej Bednarek and Prof. Lucyna Woźniak, the Vice-Rector for Science, was held at the Clinical and Didactic Center of the Medical University of Lodz.

The purchase of the new high-quality AB SCIEX  Triple TOFTM 4600 Spectrometer located in the Department of Structural Biology of Medical University of Lodz and made available as a VIRTUAL LAB for research groups operating in the HARC project as well as other employees of the University has made it possible to arrange this novelty symposium.

The main topic of the meeting was the application of a mass spectrometry analysis to metabolomics, lipidomics, proteomics and genomics. This very important and still-developing theme raises universal interest, thereby it was justified to arrange this kind of symposium.

We were hosting representatives from such institutions as the Universities of Gdańsk and Łódź, Medical Universities of Gdańsk, Łódź and Białystok, Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, Poznań and Olsztyn so we knew a wealth of applications of mass spectrometry in studies such as metabolic disorders in consequence of oxidative stress, research of metabolic profile in plants to improve resistance to weather conditions, metabolomic studies in rare diseases like the Wolfram and Alstrom syndromes, monogenic diabetes and leukemia occurring in children, use of industrial strains of microorganisms for detoxification and biodegradation of xenobiotics harmful to the environment, energetic and nucleotides conversion metabolism, searching for new biomarkers in cancer and cardiovascular diseases.

At the end of the conference, a discussion was held about creation of the first website in Poland dedicated to scientists who are involved in metabolomic studies, commercialization of results, trainings for researchers to ameliorate their skills and knowledge and next year, the  “Metabolomic Circle” meeting which will be organized in Gdańsk.
